Turning Passion Into Action

Project Barkada was formed by Deirdre Levy, Joey Golja, and Lugao Kasberg in New York City, the epicenter of Covid-19 pandemic, during the Spring of 2020 as a way to help those in the community most at risk. We work with local businesses to get food and drinks to our front line healthcare providers and people in need. Since March of 2020 we’ve delivered over 180,000 meals, spanning all five boroughs of New York City and back in the Philippines. We also deliver PPE, water, medicine, and other supplies as needed by folks. “Barkada” means a group of friends in Tagalog, the main language of the Philippine Islands. As Filipinx-Americans, this grassroots effort brings people together in our community to help anyone in need.

Stronger together

Deirdre is a special educator in Brooklyn. In addition to being a remote learning teacher during the COVID19 pandemic, Deirdre schedules, organizes and facilitates the deliveries through #projectbarkada. She also volunteers in mutual aid efforts by delivering PPE to seniors in NYCHA housing. For more information, check out
